Is Your Keyword Research Tool Doing ALL The Work?
Completing any keyword research often seems more difficult than it really has to be, I absolutely LOVE Micro Niche Finder simply because it makes life easier, you have so many options to choose from when it comes to filtering out results and examining the viability of keywords in more detail. But you really do need to learn to step out of the comfort zone of tools like MNF which effectively do all the work for you, whats more, you will find that by looking in places other than the results presented by keyword tools you will get more niche ideas, better keyword ideas and also a better understanding on the viability and structure of the niche you are looking to work in.
On a day to day basis you will see keywords floating in front of your face in many places across the web, but many of these "keyword goldmines" are often neglected as a place to find some excellent keyword and niche ideas.
To name a few, the following are just a handful of places you can look both before, during and after the niche site creation process:
- Google Insights
- Google Wonder Wheel
- WordTracker Free Keyword Tool
- Keyword Discovery Keyword Tool
- Google Related Searches
Just the other day I was looking at keywords for an e-course I was writing for Niche Site Platform and it's amazing how you can very quickly get "Niche Overload" (in a good way) just by doing a little more research. Just by entering the term “Sleeping bag liner” into just a few of the entities from the list above you will see the related terms which I was able to gather very quickly and easily:
Google Related Searches
The related searches are all shown at the bottom of the page, of course many of these terms may not get enough search volume to be viable but you must remember that these are terms people ARE actually searching for.

Google Wonder Wheel
How many of you actually use the Wonder Wheel to generate niche and keyword ideas? It's a fantastic place to delve further into the sub-niches and micro-niches we are all trying to target.

Google Search Engine
Just by typing your main target keyword phrase into the MAIN Google search engine search form you will be amazed at how many additional keyword ideas you'll be able to come up with. And again, remember that people ARE searching with these search terms.
If fact just by using a few of the tools above (and no keyword tool) I was able to gather the following keyword ideas:
- sleeping bag liners (Primary Keyword)
- Double sleeping bag liner
- silk sleeping bag liner
- cotton sleeping bag liner
- silk mummy sleeping bag liner
- mummy sleeping bag liner
- sleeping bag liner review
- fleece sleeping bag liner
- fleece double sleeping bag liner
- coleman sleeping bag liner
- coleman fleece sleeping bag liner
- down sleeping bag liner
- gelert sleeping bag liner
- coolmax sleeping bag liner
- warmest sleeping bag liner
- blacks sleeping bag liner
Of course other search engines like Yahoo and Bing can be used in a similar way to gain even more ideas. Overall though, I guess what I'm trying to highlight with this post is that you really have to step out of your comfort zone sometimes and get your hands dirty. Don't just rely on the keyword tools to do the work for you and equally don't always rely on what the keyword tools are telling you, use your own common sense, instincts and research abilities to find those golden niches.

This is a great post. It is easy to get stuck using a single tool, then missing out on great keywords because of it. You’ve put together a solid list of tools.
Thanks Rochelle. You’re absolutely right, that’s exactly what happens, you miss out on some potentially great keywords. I love tools like MNF as much as the next person but they shouldn’t be used in isolation.
Ben,
Another great post. I use all of these above and have started designing small sites matching the wonder wheel and that works well. The main other source I would add is the list of keywords and phrases people type in to get to your site. Some of my best sites are spin offs from all the traffic I got to a couple of pages on another site. Looking forward to the e-course and videos for Niche Platform.
Hi Diane,
You’re absolutely spot on. Just recently I took one of my sites with Search2Post on and completely re-vamped it BUT in the process I was able to build a completely new site based just around the search terms which had been entered into the search box. I was in fact going to mention that in the next post :).
Ben
Great post Ben! Excellent to see all the options in one place. Timely reminder to use more than just one tool! And I do love my keyword research, it’s a bit addictive, like gold mining maybe:)
Thanks Joanna and welcome to the blog. It is addictive, it’s cost me a fair few hundred dollars these last few months in domains I’ve simply HAD to by :)
This is a superb post and definitely a good read.
I find that not one tool can be used for all research. Just like a flat blade screw driver can’t work with all types of screws, one research tool can’t be used with all keyword research.
Thank you for your post,
Lucia
Thank you Lucia and welcome to the blog for the first time.
It’s definitely great to mix and match with the tools you use, you’ll come up with so many other keyword and Niche ideas that way.
I use a couple of the keyword tools you mentioned, but must admit I had never heard of the Google wonderwheel before.
I used it to get some ideas for a new niche site I’m working on and it works a treat. Thanks Ben!

I am also sorting out so I can buy one of your software (the niche site building one) :D
Congratulation on your success!
I hope to be making some mind blowing paper on auto pilot before the year ends. Thanks to people like you, Mr. Ling, Adam Short, and many more!
Keep up the good work guys!
