WordPress 2.8 Beta 1 is Released for Testing

For those of you who are using WordPress to build your blogs or to build an affiliate website then here is a bit of news for you, WordPress 2.8 Beta 1 was released just last week for beta testing. I have downloaded it myself and have set it up on my test domain where I test alot of stuff before using it on a live site. Obviously if you want to try it out please remember it is in beta 1 release so I would certainly not recommend trying out on any live sites yet just in case there are any major bugs in it.
So far I am quite impressed, okay it's not a major update so what can they have done to make it any better. Essentially there are a lot of 'behind the scenes' type changes will include changes to the MySQL databases but there have been some user interface changes which are actually quite good. The main changes which you will find quite useful are:
Useful Updates
- The ability to search for and add new themes directly from your admin backend (In the same way as with plugins, no need for FTP)
- An improved drag and drop widget interface that enables you to manage all of your theme's widgetized area at once, it also allows you to save the settings of any deactivated widgets in a 'sandbox' type area. This is really useful if you have been using text widgets for example.
Not so useful/Cosmetic updates
- Improved icons in the admin area.
- An improved look to the blue admin interface option.
There are also a lot more features which I haven't added here but these are the main ones which really stuck out. You can read a more comprehensive list of features right here:
