Yes you read correctly, if you haven't bought your name in a DOTCOM domain name yet then you are completely mad in my opinion. If you are looking to get anywhere online then I truly believe that you should own the DOTCOM for your actual name, after all domains cost a small pittance at around $8-10 for a DOTCOM. If you are ever going to brand yourself properly online then you need to buy yourself your DOTCOM name.
I know you are sitting there asking me 'Okay Ben if you think this then why don't you own BenJohnson.com?'. There is a simple answer for this and that is I missed the boat so to speak, BenJohnson.com was available at a point back in the past and I missed my chance to acquire it. I have tried to contact the individual who owns it to try and purchase it but they have ignored my emails and I have been unable to make contact with them so far.
The fact is that if you buy your own name now then you won't be forced to pay through the nose for it in the future. Even though I haven't been able to get hold of the person who owns BenJohnson.com I know that if I could, they would want a pretty penny for it even though there is no 'real' website on it as such. Is this right that they should be able to do this though? My answer is probably not but hey who's going to be able to change it, without taking them to court and demanding that the domain should be mine as it represents my company and brand then I won't really get very far.
For me, owning a DOTCOM domain of your own name is like having a decent private registration number plate on your car, it's an asset to yourself.
This is why I recommend that you buy, if you haven't already, your name in the form of a DOTCOM domain name. So what are you waiting for? Go on over to Godaddy today and see if it's available and in just a few minutes from now you could own your DOTCOM.
BUY YOUR NAME IN DOTCOM TODAY!
Good luck!.

Hi Ben,
I couldn`t agree more however, my name is John Edwards, so as you can see compared to a certain senator in the USA, my google results don`t come near even using SEO as the organic results are far too vast !
great post though Ben, take care.
TTFN….Ed.
Missed out on my own several years ago… I do have 3 of my kids, and several relatives though.
I WAS able to get my own .ME domain… MarkHansen.me
Its a close second if the dotcom is gone.
Mark
Hi Ben,
Your blog is simply awesome! I am wondering if you started out with John T’s Coaching program last year?
Since my name is somewhat unusual, I was lucky and ws able to obtain my .com :-)
Thank you for a great post!

That’s the problem with a more popular name, obviously it was quite similar with me as most extensions were taken.
Mark
I’ve often thought of getting the .me extension for my name but I haven’t ever really ever thought what I would do with it, so can I really justify adding another domain to the ever growing list? I’ll blame you Mark :D
Svenja
Thank you for the compliment, it’s certainly appreciated. I started the same time as you but I had already been working online in my spare time and run service sites for other affiliate marketing products, specifically BANS. I mainly wanted to look at the product creation aspect of JT’s program which has been really enlightening.
See you around the forum.
Ben :).
Hi Ben,
I was lucky, my name was available although I thought it wasn’t the first time I looked – weird
Enjoy the journey.
Mandy
I tried to get my own name as a DOTCOM but wasn’t able to get it using just my name so I added ASK to the front and managed to get it that way.
James Mann DOTCOM was purchased back in 2001 by a photographer. That was about the time I started my online business but didn’t think of it back then.
I bought it back in 2007 but never really got around to using.
Good advice.
This might sound extreme, but I ensured that our children’s names as domains were in my possession before they were born! Now I know they can own “theirname.com” for life.
Wow,
that is a great idea as far as registering your child’s name. I just checked and my daughter’s name is available.
She will be thrilled :)
Mandy,
Yet you would have thought your name would have been taken, your last name isn’t too rare at all is it?
James
That’s a shame you haven’t used it, i’m sure you could think of some use for it. Although I have a lot of domains lying around which I just don’t use….it’s amazing how many you accumulate.:)
Ben & Ron
Yes, that is an idea indeed, I think it will certainly be an investment for the future. On a similar note my brother has done something like this except its with a car registration, he has bought his 4 year old his initials in a private number plate for his first car. Strange I know but in 14 years time it may prove to be a good investment and it’s a nice gift.
Congratulations on acquiring those domains :)
Cheers
Ben
Hi Ben, good sound advice my friend. And you’re dead right it is an investment for our future, and that is what we make it.
Great looking blog, with fantastic content.
Respect & Regards
Barry-Wells
PS, it was as close as i could get. (using the – between my name.
Hi Barry
One day I will get around to making an offer on BenJohnson.com. I think the – doesn’t cause a problem in your domain, it’s certainly the next best thing.
Thanks for stopping by.
Ben
Good advice Ben. I was already too late for my name, so I put the year I was born at the end. I like my blog being under my name however. Keep up the good work.
John
Hi Ben,
I haven’t been around in a while and I must say I like the new look. You do have a point there that you should have your own DOTCOM. I would have liked to just get my last name but it snapped up a very long time ago. Its is not being used on a live site at the moment so I might try and by it from the person who owns it.
