Generating Article Ideas For Your Niche Website!

Published on 14th January 2010

As we all know content is king, there is no denying that adding fresh, relevant content to your website will help with your rankings in the search engines providing it is done correctly. But one thing which people often struggle with is what content topics to use on their website, I know this is something I used to struggle with when I first started out online. But it doesn't have to be as hard as you think.

There are essentailly two things you need your content to have and they are:

  1. Relevance to your reader and to the theme of your niche website
  2. A demand for that content in the organic searches

This sort of content isn't at all hard to create and can be even easier to rank well for providing you know where to look for the right keyword phrases. Two excellent tools I love to use to find article ideas for my website are the FREE Wordtracker keyword tool and the FREE Keyword Discovery tool. Both of these tools generate some great long tail keyword phrases which can give you some great ideas for articles, better still because the phrases are longtail and very specific they are often very easy to rank for.

The Easiest Way To Generate Ideas!

Generating article ideas is easy, simply head over to the FREE Wordtracker keyword tool and do the following:

  1. Type in your 'Theme' keyword - For example if your niche site was based around golf putting then you could type the term 'golf' into the Wordtracker searchbox. You COULD type in golf putting but sometimes it's better to start with the broad search term for that market simply because you will find you get more results to sort through. Then if you find the results are not relevant enough you can drill down the search with extra search terms.
  2. Before your 'Theme' keyword enter a 'query' keyword - By 'query' keyword I am refering to Words like how, why, when, which etc.
  3. Hit enter and view your search results.

You can repeat this process with 'buying' keywords also using words like buy, purchase, find, cheap, used, sale, for sale.

What you should find is that you are returned a result set with the highest searched phrases at the top to the lowest at the bottom, the lower phrases usually have more characters and have less competition in the search engines.

A Simple Example - The Golfing Niche

If we look at the example in the screenshots below you can see I have chosen to search for the 'Theme' keyword golf to find some content ideas for my golf putting website. You can see a small sample of the results returned when using a 'query' keyword and a 'buying' keyword, both of which return some fantastic long tail keyword phrases which give me some great ideas for articles.

Checking Search Engine Competition

I don't want to get into the process of checking the strength of potential search engine competition because that is a whole other article right there but it is important that you check the search engine competition for the phrase you choose to use. A very broad rule of thumb is that if you type the phrase into the search engine and find results which include sites like articlebase, ezine articles, squidoo and other web 2.0 sites then usually it will be relatively easy to rank for. As I say though, this is a very loose rule of thumb and other methods should also be employed.

In the next post I will be talking about how to find out if your chosen phrase is too competitive as well as giving you a few suggestions on how to use your chosen phrase.

@Steve – Thanks Steve, it’s a great way of finding ideas for articles around your niche.

    @Rochelle – It’s great isn’t it and best of all it’s free, I like FREE stuff :).

I also mean’t to say it’s important never to rely on numbers from just one keyword tool but to use a few, most importantly I always use common sense.

    Hi Ben

Great Idea and suggestion. I am about to start the whole article writing thing for my ebook. I have been putting it off for months.

Good idea to stir up some article ideas. When in doubt, ask yourself the question “If I was buying golf putters/red wacky widgets/whatever, what would I want to know?” Write down the first 10 questions and topics, and then go to town getting those up and finding the keywords to match.

Once you have that first batch of articles up, you can see how people respond and what produces, and then expand further on those hot topics.
