Generating Article Ideas – The ‘RIGHT’ phrase!

Published on 19th January 2010

In the last post you'll remember that I spoke about using the FREE keyword tools available to you, such as Wordtracker, Keyword Discovery and the Google Keyword Tool to find article ideas for your niche website. In this post I just want to briefly touch on the main things to consider before pursuing one of these phrases.

Before you go after any keyword or phrase you are going to want to ask yourself a couple of questions before you spend the time trying to get your site to rank well for it:

  1. What are the searchers intentions?
  2. How will you 'monetize/convert' a visitor to a sale?
  3. How well can you rank for your chosen phrase and is it worth it?

What are the searchers intentions?

This is probably the most important out of all factors to consider. If the person searching types a phrase which demonstrates no commerical intent whatsoever then there is going to be very little point in targeting it. By using our 'query' keywords and 'buying' keywords in the last post to search for a target phrase we should have been able to identify potential phrases which do offer some degree of commercial intent. Taking the phrase "how to buy a hybrid golf club" as an example, this phrase recieves around 20-30 daily searches, depending on which tool you use, which is a pretty decent volume of targeted traffic totalling around 600-700 searches per month. The phrase has a degree of commercial intent in that the search phrase includes the phrase "buy a hybrid", which is then followed by a specific type of product. BUT because the searcher is using the term "how to buy" there is also the chance that they have no intention of actually buying a club online and are just looking for that information to then buy the club elsewhere. My initial thoughts are that it doesn't look like the most commercially profitable key phrase I've seen but it isn't bad either and it may be worth giving it a shot IF you know how you are going to use it to convert your visitors, how easy it will be to rank for and if (search volume wise) it will be worth the effort.

How will you convert your visitor into a sale?

As I mentioned with the phrase above, it isn't the most commercial phrase I have come across and probably offers somewhere in the region of a 45-50% commercial value, the results we saw in the previous post do show phrases which have far more commercial value such as "buy disc golf frisbees". But I know I would find it much easier to write a quality and informative article around the term "How to buy hybrid golf clubs" than I would around "buy disc golf frisbees". But you have to identify how you are going to convert that visitor into a sale, it's no good writing your quality piece of content and expecting your visitor to wonder off a buy and product on your site - you have to lead them there. This is where funelling visitors through well written articles on your site to product pages comes in very handy and that is probably an option you would consider if you chose to target this phrase. However you don't just have to add the content directly to your website.

An additional way you could choose to use the keyword phrase "How to buy hybrid golf clubs" is to help you rank for the highly commercial phrase "buy hybrid golf clubs". You would be indirectly gaining traffic from organic searches as a result of your increased rankings for that phrase rather than recieving direct visitors from your content. There are several ways to do this through the use of quality article directories and web 2.0 websites such as squidoo, hubpages and Wordpress.com. But first you need to determine how easy the phrase is to rank for.

How well can you rank for your chosen phrase and is it really worth it?

In general you will find that the long tail keyword phrases you identify with good search volumes usually don't have that much 'real' competition and are therefore fairly easy to rank well for. Of course you will come across instances where this isn't the case but not very often. Determinining how easy it would be to rank for a given phrase doesn't need to be as complicated as people often make it out to be and there are a few factors which you can quite easily identify in the search rankings to help you understand if a phrase like this is possible to rank well for. Often people mistakingly think that because there are only 50,000 results for their chosen key phrase it will be easy to rank for, but of course this isn't always the case.
In the next post I'll be talking about some of these factors and showing you a free and easy to use tool which I use to enable me to easily see the strength of the top 20 search engine listings.
