Inappropriate Ad Placement WILL Loose You Sales!

Published on 24th June 2009

One of the most common things I see, and I have made this mistake myself in the past, is people putting ads on their affiliate sites in prime locations such as at the very top of the website page in the header or above their content before affiliate listings. Many people don't think about this when they are putting a site together but just imagine for a second you are not that familiar with the internet and you're doing a basic search for a product you want to buy. You click on a link from Google which brings you through to an eBay affiliate website which lists auctions of the product you are looking for but instead of staying on that website and browsing the content and the listings you see a nice big advertising banner or adsense listing at the top of the site and you click on it, immediately you are taken away from the site.

You would be surprised how many people show me sites which have this kind of scenario going on. Their stats show their site visitors leave almost immediately after entering but their adsense account is making some money from the site. 9 times out of 10 this is because the site has inappropriately placed advertising. Okay so your site has made $0.98 cents from an adsense clickthrough but that $0.98 cents could have made you $10 from a sale or even $50 from an eBay ACRU.

Now, I place advertisements on my site including adsense and I do this to make money but I only place them there as secondary money makers and I usually put them towards the bottom of the page. So, why does this make a difference? Well think about it, by the time your visitors are at the bottom of your page if they haven't clicked through on a listing or bought an item already, then the chances are they are probably about ready to leave your site anyway. If this is the case then why not make a little money on their exit through a banner or adsense, after all it's not easy getting visitors to your site in the first place so don't just give them up to a measly banner ad or adsense ad without first trying to convert the traffic for a better profit.

    Good point Ben.

    I experimented with the Amazon widgets. What I did was remove the CJ banner and Adsense placements that were in one spot together – replaced it with an Amazon widget. In 5 days, I have had 10 sales at Amazon. The adsense placement was moved to the bottom and the $ stayed the same on the adsense clicks. CJ ads never converted well, but the Amazon widgets have resulted in more $. Woohoo.

      @Sean-

      That’s fantastic, well done! it just goes to show how well placed ads can improve your sales. Your right it’s all about experimentation, if something doesn’t work then ditch it and usually you find what works well which can be replicated across several sites usually.
